Workshop „openCost: the road to publication cost transparency“
Von 5. bis 7. Oktober fand am Deutschen Elektronen-Synchrotron in Hamburg der internationale Expert*innen-Workshop „openCost: the road to publication cost transparency“ statt. Dort präsentierten die Projektpartner*innen DESY, UB Bielefeld und UB Regensburg erste Projektergebnisse. Daneben diente der Workshop dem Wissensaustausch zwischen nationalen und internationalen Expert*innen. So brachten Speaker*innen aus acht verschiedenen Ländern ihre Perspektiven ein.
Erster Tag: Projektvorstellung und Austausch mit Expert*innen
Am ersten Workshoptag stellten sich die Projektpartner*innen im Block „The openCost Project“ in kurzen Vorträgen vor und gingen auf ihre jeweilige Rolle im Projekt ein. Danach widmete sich Bernhard Mittermaier, Leiter der Zentralbibliothek im FZ Jülich, in einer Keynote dem Thema „Informationsbudget“. Er lieferte dabei wichtige einführende Impulse für den Workshop. Darauf berichteten Experten der California Digital Library und Sikt (Norwegen) im Themenblock „Knowledge exchange between national and international experts“ von ihren Erfahrungen mit Publikationsgebühren und der Kostenerfassung.
Zweiter Tag: Ideenaustausch und interaktive Hands-on Labs
Der zweite Workshoptag schloss thematisch direkt an den Vorherigen an. Erst brachten internationale und nationale Expertinnen von Jisc, AT2OA2, der finnischen Nationalbibliothek und dem DFG-Projekt Transform2Open ihre jeweiligen Perspektiven zu Publikationsgebühren ein. Im Anschluss hatten die rund 40 Teilnehmenden die Möglichkeit, in verschiedenen Hands-on Labs gemeinsam an der Ausgestaltung eines Metadatenschemas zu arbeiten.
So widmeten sich die Teilnehmenden des Hands-on Labs „Metadata schema“ dem aktuellen internen Vorschlag für ein Metadatenschema, diskutierten diesen und gaben fruchtbare Anregungen. Im Hands-on Lab „Terminology“ widmete man sich eindeutigen, klaren Begriffsdefinitionen zur Beschreibung von Kostendaten. Ferner beschäftigte sich das dritte Hands-on Lab mit der Betrachtung von Zahlungen, die nicht eindeutig einer Publikation zugeordnet werden können. Dabei wurde insbesondere auf Verlagsvereinbarungen, Kostenteilung und Artikel ohne DOI eingegangen. Der Tag endete schließlich nach zwei weiteren Vorträgen aus dem Themenblock „New Services and Subsequent Use”. Dabei berichteten Experten der Elektronischen Zeitschriftenbibliothek (EZB) und von Unsub/OpenAlex, wie man künftig openCost Daten einbinden und in anderen Services nachnutzen könnte.
Dritter Tag: Resümee und Nachnutzung
Am letzten Workshoptag wurden schließlich die Lab-Ergebnisse vom Tag zuvor noch einmal in großer Runde zusammengefasst und diskutiert. Diese Ergebnisse dienen nun als Ausgangspunkt für die Weiterentwicklung und Feinabstimmung des aktuellen Entwurfs eines Metadatenschemas durch das Projektteam. Abschließend brachten Expertinnen des Open Access Monitors und von OA Switchboard ihre Perspektiven in zwei weiteren spannenden Vorträgen aus dem Themenblock „New Services and Subsequent Use” ein.
Der Expert*innenworkshop fasst die Desiderate der einzelnen Teilnehmenden und der von ihnen vertretenen Gremien zusammen. Die Ergebnisse des Workshops werden nun aufgearbeitet, und fließen in das Metadatenschema ein, das im Dezember der Community zur Kommentierung zur Verfügung gestellt wird. Die einzelnen Beiträge des Workshops stehen auf der Veranstaltungsseite zur Verfügung. Zudem wird das openCost Team Conference Proceedings herausgeben.
Report on the international expert workshop „openCost: the road to publication cost transparency“
From October 5 to 7, the international expert workshop „openCost: the road to publication cost transparency“ took place at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron in Hamburg. There the project partners DESY, UB Bielefeld and UB Regensburg presented first project results. The workshop also served as a platform for knowledge exchange between national and international experts. Speakers from eight different countries contributed their perspectives.
First day: Introduction and knowledge exchange with experts
On the first day of the workshop, the project partners introduced themselves in the block „The openCost Project“ and addressed their respective roles in the project. Afterwards, Bernhard Mittermaier, Head of the Central Library at Forschungszentrum Jülich, gave a keynote on the topic of „Information Budget“. He provided important impulses for the workshop. In the thematic block „Knowledge exchange between national and international experts“, experts from the California Digital Library and Sikt (Norway) reported on their experiences with publication costs and cost recording.
Second day: Knowledge exchange and interactive hands-on labs
The second day of the workshop continued from this point. International and national experts from Jisc, AT2OA2, the National Library of Finland and the DFG project Transform2Open contributed their respective perspectives on publication costs. Afterwards, the 40 participants had the opportunity to work together on a metadata schema in various hands-on labs.
In the hands-on lab „Metadata schema“, participants discussed the current internal proposal for a metadata schema. The participants provided fruitful suggestions. The hands-on lab „Terminology“ was dedicated to clear, unambiguous definitions of terms to describe cost data. And the third hands-on lab dealt with the consideration of payments that cannot be clearly assigned to a publication. In particular, the participants addressed publishing agreements, cost sharing, and articles without DOI. Finally, the day ended after two more presentations from the last thematic block, „New Services and Subsequent Use.“ Experts from the Electronic Journals Library (EZB) and Unsub/OpenAlex reported on how openCost data could be used in other services in the future.
Third Day: Wrap-up and subsequent use
On the last day of the workshop, the lab results from the previous day were summarized for all participants and lively discussed. These results will serve as a starting point to enhance and fine tune the project team’s current internal metadata schema. Afterwards, experts from the Open Access Monitor and OA Switchboard rounded off the workshop with two more interesting presentations from the block „New Services and Subsequent Use“.
The expert workshop summarizes the desiderata of the individual participants and the committees they represent. The results of the workshop are now being processed and will be incorporated into the metadata schema. This schema will be put up for discussion in December. All contributions from the workshop are available on the event page. The openCost team will also publish conference proceedings.
